About The Conservancy

The Green Valley Agricultural Conservancy (the Conservancy) was born from the Middle Green Valley Specific Plan (Section 3.3.4.A), adopted by the County of Solano beginning in 2011. The Conservancy is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to celebrate and perpetuate the tradition of the working landscapes that have characterized the Middle Green Valley area of Solano County for well over 150 years.

The Conservancy’s approach is grounded in the promotion of sustainable food and agriculture systems as a means of creating synergy between agricultural lands, the built and natural environments, community health, and natural resource stewardship.

Founded in May of 2010, the Conservancy provides mechanisms to assure the long-term preservation and management of the open lands in Green Valley. Under the Middle Green Valley Specific Plan, the Conservancy helps manage and monitor approximately 1,500 acres of productive agricultural land, pastures, and natural areas.

Our Mission

The mission of the Green Valley Agricultural Conservancy is to protect the natural diversity, agricultural vitality, and rural character of Green Valley by overseeing the preservation, monitoring, and management of the natural and agricultural lands, and by fostering an appreciation and understanding of the environment, the connection to regional food systems, and a healthy lifestyle.

Our Role in
Green Valley

The Conservancy provides an objective organization that brings together the foundational community aspirations of education, resource and open space preservation, community connectivity, and agricultural awareness, as outlined in the Middle Green Valley Specific Plan.

The Conservancy has oversight over four key initiatives:

  • The Conservancy oversees the preservation, management, stewardship, enhancement, restoration, and conservation easements for natural resources within Middle Green Valley. These include oak woodlands, riparian areas, creeks, rangelands, pastures, and agricultural lands.

Where appropriate, the Conservancy assists landowners in identifying and working with qualified conservation easement holders to ensure long-term protection of these lands.

  • The Conservancy supports the ongoing viability and sustainability of agricultural and grazing operations within the Middle Green Valley Specific Plan Area. This includes encouraging productive, diversified, and sustainable agriculture across vineyards, cattle ranches, row crops, orchards, flowers and herbs, and other appropriate farming types.

The Conservancy may utilize tools such as farm leases, management agreements, subsidies, and other forms of support to strengthen agricultural productivity and long-term success.

  • The Conservancy promotes educational, interpretive, and research opportunities that foster appreciation and understanding of the natural environment and regional food systems.

This includes supporting agricultural education programs, interactive learning opportunities with farmers and ranchers, and community engagement activities that connect people more deeply to the land and how food is produced.

  • The Conservancy manages and administers a comprehensive community Design Review process consistent with the goals and principles of the Middle Green Valley Specific Plan.

Design Review is required for any proposed structure or development within the designated Middle Green Valley Specific Plan Area and is a prerequisite to applying for Solano County building permits.

The Conservancy works through its Conservancy Design Review Committee (CRC), established in 2011, to review projects for conformance with the standards and objectives of the Specific Plan.

The Land We Steward

The Green Valley Agricultural Conservancy exists to help ensure that agriculture, conservation, and community life remain deeply connected in Middle Green Valley. Through long-term stewardship, thoughtful planning, and collaborative oversight, the Conservancy works to preserve the rural beauty and cultural legacy of Green Valley for generations to come.
